Serious Musicians Can Have Fun Too

I can attest from personally attending Michael Graham’s Zoom mini-workshop this morning that he is certainly a serious musician. His bio confirms that. “Michael is a conductor and composer based in Edinburgh. He currently works with various orchestral, choral and instrumental ensembles in Scotland and further afield performing a wide range of repertoire, from historical to contemporary styles. Described as having “an infectious enthusiasm for music”, he served as the Edinburgh Society of Recorder Players’ Musical Director between 2011 and 2017 and established and directed the Edinburgh Recorder Ensemble, a one-to-a-part chamber orchestra. He has won several prizes in conducting from the University of Edinburgh and the Association of British Choral Directors. In January 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Bayreuth Scholarship from the Wagner Society of Scotland.”

What is missing from the bio is a mention that Graham is also the conductor of The Really Terrible Orchestra. The orchestra’s ranks comprise very dedicated musicians who are quite successful in a variety of important professions, but, by their own admission, aren’t really that skilled with their instruments.

Here, Graham sets the tone for The Really Terrible Orchestra by conducting with a light sabre.

A Message from the Lycaeides Consort

Lycaeides ensemble played a concert at Coburg Village retirement community in Clifton Park in January 2023. This performance was dedicated to Carolyn Hermes, our friend and Lycaeides colleague.  She was a long-time recorder player and HMRS member. Carolyn was working on the Coburg Village concert with Lycaeides when she passed away in December. Players for this concert:  Linda Botimer, Judy Pardee, Melanie Axel-Lute, Marie Carreno-Maas and Bob Schultz.

The last three remaining of Carolyn’s flutes. They have found a good new home.

Happy Musical New Year

We were pleased to be visited by Helen Hooker for the second January in a row to kick off another year of virtual mini-workshops with an interesting and wide-ranging set of pieces from 4 musical eras. An attendance comprising 38 members of the Hudson Mohawk Recorder Society and the Recorder Society of Connecticut enjoyed a few minutes of exchanging New Year’s greetings prior to digging into the day’s music. Historical background and performance tips and techniques were offered for each piece. We are thrilled to announce that new members were introduced for each of the Societies. The cooperative joint sponsorship of the second annual 10-part series of mini-workshops by HMRS and RSC has proven to be a great success, forging robust participation, musical enjoyment and new friendships.
