2021-2022 Season is Underway

The first mini-workshop of our 10 part virtual series, cosponsored with the Recorder Society of Connecticut, featuring Rainer Beckmann, took place this morning. By all indications, the event was a great success and enthusiastically received. We thank musical directors Susan Iadone (RSC) and Kathy Kuhrt (HMRS) for working to put a series together that features well-known coaches and familiar composers from all over the US and UK. Remember, membership in either HMRS or RSC includes admission to all of these programs.

While HMRS members are enjoying a continuation of virtual programming for the 2021-2022 HMRS season, it’s time to make sure that no one misses a single program remaining in the 2021-2022 season. To continue participating with us it’s necessary to join with the members who have already renewed and submit your dues payment of $40 by check to Gail Robinson at 101 Edgecomb Street Albany, NY 12209. Your payment is due by September, 30, 2021. If you send your check later than 10 days prior to the deadline, reply to this email to notify us and we will continue your membership in time for the first mini workshop in October. Thanks to our renewing members and welcome to everyone!

Update for 2021-2022 Season

Greetings members! The Board met on July 26 to review our chapter finances, plan a tentative budget and, most importantly, investigate possibilities for activities for the upcoming season. At the time of the meeting, we agreed to offer 2 meetings per month for the upcoming season. The Board felt that the response of HMRS members to our series of mini-workshops was very favorable and that we should consider repeating a series this season. At that time, there was some hope that the pandemic conditions would also allow a possible return to in-person meetings early in the season. With the present surge conditions, that option remains uncertain.

In the last week we have been able to secure an agreement with the Recorder Society of Connecticut (RSC) to cosponsor a series of 10 virtual mini-workshops. These workshops will be conducted by professional clinicians and will likely include some of the favorite personalities we were fortunate to enjoy working with in the past season. Tentative plans are to offer these events monthly on Saturday mornings to follow the usual meeting schedule of RCS. These mini-workshops would be available at no charge to regular HMRS members. The first session featuring Rainer Beckmann will be offered on Saturday, September 11 from 10am to 11:30am. As usual, a Zoom link will be emailed to all active members prior to the meeting day.

Furthermore, we are also planning to continue monthly meetings on Sunday afternoons. Our hope is that we will be able to gather in person at Lynnwood  church. In the event that pandemic conditions preclude in-person gathering, we will continue with locally originated virtual programming. Sunday afternoon meetings will be scheduled from 2pm to 3:30pm for either in-person or virtual meetings. For the upcoming season, members of RSC may attend all HMRS Sunday meetings by paying a one-time joint membership fee of $20.

Annual dues for HMRS members remain at $40. Please remit your dues payment by check to Gail Robinson, HMRS Treasurer, 101 Edgecomb Street Albany, NY 12209, by September 30, 2021.

Schedule details will be updated as they become available and will be posted on our website. Email reminders will also be sent to members one week prior to each event. Zoom links will be included in the emails.

President’s Message July 2021

Message from your new chapter president

HMRS has every reason to celebrate the just-completed 2020-2021 season. Regular meetings were smoothly converted from in-person playing sessions to bimonthly virtual sessions using Zoom. I was constantly gratified and impressed by the enthusiasm and resilience shown by the membership. We owe a huge thankyou to our program leadership, Lee Danielson and Kathy Kuhrt who mastered overdubbing and the basics of video and audio production to provide us with quality recordings to accompany our “muted” play-alongs. Trust me, playing and synchronizing all 4 parts of just one piece takes a lot of skill and patience. I heard it in progress! They did it for a complete playlist for the season.

Attendance at virtual sessions averaged 15-25 members. Our total membership has reached 32, including some individuals living well outside the Capital District. Some of the new members were attracted by an outstanding lineup of 5 miniworkshops featuring well known clinicians and two of our favorite composers. Who could have guessed that we would be led by Marg Hall from her home in Scotland? We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of two of the miniworkshops by grants from the American Recorder Society. I encourage members to consider joining the national society as a way to support this type of aid and also to receive member copies of new music, and gain access to a host of playing resources for all levels.

The HMRS Board will meet soon to consider plans for the upcoming season. We are hoping that in-person sessions will soon be possible but rest assured that there will be playing sessions of some type for certain.

Finally, I’m sure we all want to wish the very best to Lee and Susan Danielson as they move to Massachusetts this summer as part of “downsizing”. The invaluable contribution that Lee made during this past season to help make virtual sessions so successful and enjoyable was just the most recent of his many efforts to benefit HMRS. A long-time active chapter member, Lee served as president, worked with the chapter library and was a member of several consorts. We hope that Lee will still be able to join us occasionally, if only virtually.

—Mike Kuhrt, HMRS President
